he idea that positive
results come from
negative events is
prevalent in cultures and
religions around the world.
e Cruci xion; the Phoe-
nix rising from the ashes; Weiji, the Chinese
way of life where followers believe that from
chaos comes opportunity … all of these rep-
resent our basic human belief that good things
come from bad.
e last few months have brought both
chaos and opportunity to
CFO Studio
. We were
busy interviewing, selecting, engaging, and
transitioning to a new publishing partner, and
extricating ourselves from a chaotic relation-
ship. at transition forced us to forgo our June
issue. We are very excited to announce that we
selected New Jersey-based Ru aus Designs to
redesign and produce
CFO Studio Magazine
under our direction. Subscription requests con-
tinue to grow, as has the number of interviews
at CFO Studio, now totaling more than 80
on-camera interviews. Article submissions from
CFOs, and the
CFO Studio
Knowledge Registry
have also grown.
My 82-year-old mother complained that the
rst issue contained no articles wri en by or
about women. So, in deference to my mom, I
ask: “Where are all the women?” as we search
for more women nance executives to author
articles and appear in on-camera interviews.
Consistent with the stature of Agfa Cor-
poration’s Gunther Mertens and Avis Budget
Group’s David B. Wyshner, this issue features
Barry Rowan, Vonage Corporation’s CFO. He
discusses how business serves society and how
the CFO is charged with responsible value
creation and telling the truth. In the Q4 issue,
Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey’s
David Huber will be featured, discussing how
the Patient Protection and A ordable Care Act
(PPACA) will a ect consumers and businesses.
Finance executives from greater New Jersey
celebrate, network, and reconnect at CFO
Studio Receptions, such as the one we’ll hold
recognizing Barry Rowan on October 4, 2012.

Meanwhile, with our friends fromUpdate
Discovery andNicoll Davis &Spinella, we
co-founded and sponsored the rst-ever NJBiz
General Counsel of the Year Award competition,
whichwas a ended by 510 corporate and legal
executives. At that event, we announced the launch
of
CFOStudio’s
twin,
General Counsel Studio.
On the national stage, the presidential election
looms large, as a precursor to either more chaos
or opportunity. e U.S. and global economies
continue to confound almost everyone. is
year, we saw the Supreme Court’s a rmation
of the PPACA, and the Jumpstart Our Business
Startups ( JOBS) Act. e JOBS act seems more
like an investment act, doesn’t it? So, here’s to
increasing investment and creating jobs!
While I am writing this, I am watching the
2012 Olympics opening ceremonies, hoping
the Brits will dazzle us as did the Chinese in
Beijing, praying that the bad guys will stay
away, and that our best athletes will bring
home lots of gold. Hey, given the state of
the economy, at $1,610 an ounce, a bunch
of Olympic wins might do the U.S. good in
more ways than one!
