SOMERSET, NJ – On September 10th, 2014, Christopher Santomassimo, Esq., General Counsel of Agfa Corporation and Steve Mullin, CFO or The Dallas Group of America, led a discussion on “Legal Spend: Controlling Costs and Eliminating Fear.” This CFO Studio Executive Dinner Series meeting was held at Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange, NJ, and it brought together finance and legal executives to share insights about minimizing legal bills while maximizing the value in their relationship with counsel. The evening was hosted by Real Estate Strategies Corporation and sponsored by WithumSmith & Brown.
Santomassimo and Mullins opened the discussion by acknowledging the disconnect that often occurs between lawyers and corporate clients. Many participants said this disconnect stems from experiences working with lawyers who are more concerned with billable hours and less interested in understanding their businesses and becoming a strategic partner. These issues ultimately can lead to a lack of trust on outside counsel. The attendees then discussed strategies for setting expectations with their outside counsel as well as addressing snowballing legal fees.
