SOMERSET, NJ – A CFO Studio Reception was held on June 3rd, 2014 to launch the second quarter issue of the magazine and fete its cover subject, Mark Guinan, senior vice president and CFO of Quest Diagnostics. The event, held at Red Knot at the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth, NJ, brought finance executives together to network, share ideas and celebrate. The reception was sponsored by Deloitte, JP Morgan Chase, the New Jersey Devils, and Robert Half International. The evening was hosted by Real Estate Strategies Corporation.

Guinan, a people-focused CFO, gave a few words and spoke about three events in his life that shaped him as a leader. Early in his career, he was in a contentious meeting and one of the executives huffed out of the room, leaving the rest of the employees demotivated. One of the other executives turned to Guinan and said, “There are energy creators and there are energy destroyers. Be an energy creator.”

The next key conversation happened years later while visiting his father. Guinan had promised not to work during the visit; but his father caught him checking his voice mail. His father asked, “Do you have to do that?” Guinan, replied, “no, but it makes me feel better to know what is going on.” His father turned to him and said, “Just never forget, you are not that important. Business went on before you were there and it will go on without you.” It was a wake up call to Guinan and a reminder of the importance of being humble.

Finally, the third conversation Guinan recalled occurred more recently. He was speaking with a friend who specializes in human resources about an employee issue. This friend advised Guinan to practice intentional leadership. This meant he should be thoughtful about all his decisions and behaviors because it is his responsibility to be a model for others.

An article detailing Guinan’s philosophies on leadership, as well as his growth strplans will appear in the 3rd Quarter 2014 issue of CFO Studio magazine.

The next CFO Studio Reception will honor David Marberger, CFO of Godiva Chocolatier. To request an invitation, please contact Lorenz.Capalad@CFOstudio.com or phone: 732-868-0000 x118.

Cheryl Marks Young, CFO of Easter Seals New Jersey, Lead Discussion on the Business of Running a Not-for-Profit at CFO Studio Executive Dinner Series Meeting

SOMERSET, NJ – On May 13th, 2014, Cheryl Marks Young, CFO of Easter Seals New Jersey moderated a CFO Studio Executive Dinner Series meeting on the topic of “Not-for-Profits: Business is Business, but Not for Women Only.” The event, held at Red Knot at the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth, NJ, brought together finance executives from both the not-for-profit and the for-profit sectors to share ideas. The evening was hosted by Real Estate Strategies Corporation.

Marks Young opened the conversation by laying out some common misconceptions people have about finance at not-for-profits. She said many people have an inaccurate perception that working in the sector is like retiring from the for-profit sector and that it’s a job for moms. The group also discussed universal challenges CFOs face, such as cash flow management, public opinion’s impact on the bottom line, creating awareness of financial sustainability among employees, and quantifying return on investment to stakeholders. The group then discussed issues unique to not-for-profits, such as getting employees and volunteers to be more receptive to private sector processes, working effectively with board members, and dealing with strict government regulations.

An article detailing this discussion will appear in the 3rd Quarter 2014 issue of CFO Studio magazine.

Since the beginning of 2014, CFO Studio has hosted several Executive Dinner Series meetings moderated by such distinguished guests as Irv Rothman, President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Financial Services; Jonathan Stearns, founder of Stearns Associated Partners; Hugh C.
